Cairo

The Heart of Greene County

The town of Cairo is the crossroads of Greene County at the convergence of NYS Routes 23, 32 and 145. Just 45 minutes south of Albany, and 20 minutes west of Hudson, Cairo is only 2.5 hours from New York City and less than 3 hours from Boston.

We are the heart of Greene County, situated perfectly with the Hudson River to our east and the Great Northern Catskill Mountains to our west.

Spend a day…

Cairo is known for some of the best trout fishing spots in the northeast. If you’re not interested in fishing, you can still take a hike or have a picnic at the Cairo Nature Center and enjoy the scenery and wildlife.

Another walking path runs around the Angelo Canna Town Park and along a stream. In July the park hosts the Greene County Youth Fair, a 4-day event that offers free admission and entertainment for families.

Community

There are many community groups and organizations to join that help make Cairo a fun and safe place to live. Throughout the year, they hold events and fundraisers to bring the neighbors together in support of the community.

At the Agroforestry Resource Center, you can attend events to learn about agriculture, the environment, and natural resources.  They also offer educational & public outreach programs.

You will find a lot of authentic German festivities and foods, especially baked goods, around town. Stop into one of our shops as you stroll along Main St. or take a drive through the backroads and explore the history and perhaps find something unique.
