Jewett

A Hidden Gem

The town of Jewett was established in 1849 and is bounded on the north by the towns of Windham and Ashland and on the west and south by Lexington and Hunter.  The town got its name from the former justice of the Supreme Court, Freeborn G. Jewett.

Many pioneers immigrated to Jewett between the late 1700s and early 1800s.  Here the settlers found rich, fertile soil, hemlock, pine, maple and other trees.    The East Creek provided food for the homes and was a source of water for mill power.

Fun in the Sun

Popular in Jewett are Black Angus, maple and honey, and dairy farms that provide local farmers’ markets with goods to sell.  This quaint town is in between two big ski resorts Hunter & Windham, with hiking access to state trails.  Come enjoy a day at Colgate Lake Wild Forest to swim or boat in the lake.

St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church is a popular tourist spot.  This Church built in 1962 with additional structures completed in the 1980s and was built with no nails.  The bell tower holds a 2,000 ton bell from Italy and a second bell from Holland.  During the summer classical music concerts are held in the Grazhda.
