The Town of Hunter is located on the southern-most border of Greene County, surrounded by high peaks within the Catskill Park. Formed in 1813, the town contains of the Village of Hunter, the Village of Tannersville, and the hamlets of Haines Falls and Elka Park. Hunter Mountain is just over 4040 feet in elevation, making it the second highest peak in the Catskill Mountains, and a year-round destination for outdoor leisure and adventure activities.
Famous for its waterfalls, views and vistas, Hunter was the focus of 19th century literary figures and the artists of the Hudson River School of painting. Today, its spectacular setting features hiking trails, mountain biking, fishing streams, camping, swimming, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, and the most spectacular display of autumn foliage in New York State.

Kaaterskill Falls is situated just above the point where Spruce Creek joins the Kaaterskill, and provides visitors with exceptional hiking and viewing experiences. This route continues west through Haines Falls, Tannersville, and the Village of Hunter, and follows the Schoharie Creek – joining the northern end of NYS 43 and intersecting with NYS Route 23 near Prattsville. NYS 296 connects to the mountain top communities in the Town of Windham.
