Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation

Unbridled in an unwavering voice for Thoroughbreds who are without a say in their own fate. Every day through advocacy, education, and direct rescue we work to prevent Thoroughbreds from ending up slaughtered in Canada and Mexico.

The horses we rescue come from all walks of life: training centers, racetracks, breeding farms, riding stables, camps, and backyards. No matter their age, accolades, or connections they have been deemed worthless and relegated to the slaughter pipeline.

It is estimated that annually 12,000-20,000 once coddled and prized American Thoroughbreds are packed into livestock trailers, shipped across borders where they are forced to suffer a violent death; a brutal and wholly indefensible evil.

With the help of contributors, donors, and an army of awesome Advocates, UNBRIDLED steps in to save the lives of Thoroughbreds who are at high-risk of slaughter. The Thoroughbreds we have saved range in age from two to twenty-nine. When our horses show us that they are ready to move on, we pair them with appropriate Adoptive Partners, foster homes, or permanent residence in our Sanctuary.

When a horse enters our care we offer a safe space, along with the time necessary to reclaim his or her dignity, and to convalesce from the shock of having been thrown away. The recovery from mental and physical trauma endured in the slaughter pipeline is often long, arduous, and expensive. Our minimum monthly expenditure per horse averages $500 ($6,000/year) to cover the cost of grain, hay, bedding, farrier, veterinary care and supplements. Additional annual expenses are $250 for dental care, and $250 for vaccinations, coggins, and check-up.

Our tagline, “Love In Action” is the mantra we exhibit daily in how we approach our work. We aim to make a meaningful difference for good in the life of each horse. Whether that be networking online, salving a physical laceration, or dressing the emotional wounds of indifference. No matter our level of engagement, our singular underlying mission is that in everything we do a better outcome is achieved to create a kinder world for horses.
