Escape to the Catskills

The Town of Hunter is located on the southernmost border of Greene County, surrounded by high peaks within the Catskill Park. Formed in 1813, the town contains of the villages of Hunter and Tannersville, and the hamlets of Haines Falls and Elka Park. Hunter Mountain is just over 4040 feet in elevation, making it the second highest peak in the Catskill Mountains, and a year-round destination for outdoor leisure and adventure activities.

The Great Outdoors

Famous for its waterfalls and vistas, Hunter was the focus of 19th century literary figures and the artists of the Hudson River School of painting.   Today, its spectacular setting features hiking trailsmountain bikingfishing streams, camping, swimming, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, and the most spectacular display of autumn foliage in New York State.

Kaaterskill Falls  is one of the area’s best destinations.  With the highest cascading waterfall in New York State, people from around the world come to explore this natural beauty.

The Mountain Cloves Scenic Byway is a 41-mile state-designated byway within the Catskill Mountains’ northern high peaks. This breathtakingly beautiful route will be an experience worth repeating. Travel parallel to the Schoharie Creek as you pass through Haines Falls, Tannersville, and the Village of Hunter.

Community

Lodging and hospitality businesses have been a major part of Hunter’s existence since the 19th century, welcoming visitors throughout the year from across the country and around the world. Specialty retail shops and eateries are popular with both visitors and residents, with a growing focus on ‘locally-sourced, locally-produced’ offerings.

The Hunter Mountain Resort hosts major festivals and events that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.  Fun for all ages with activities like ziplining, 4×4 off-road adventures, fly fishing, hiking, and much more.   Join us on the slopes during winter where you will enjoy world-class skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing.

Both the Catskill Mountain Foundation and the Hunter Foundation provide opportunities through artist residency programs, music and theater workshops, grants and business opportunities throughout the town of Hunter.  Along the way, take time to enjoy an abundance of scenic and cultural locations that are rich in history, folklore and legend.

Tannersville

Inside Hunter is the village of Tannersville, which is also referred to as “The Painted Village in the Sky” due to its colorful buildings and the love of the arts.  Tannersville has parades, festivals and events that the entire family can enjoy all season long.  On Saturday nights in the summer, come by the lake to listen or dance to music.  On Father’s day and in September, stop by Main Street and enjoy annual car shows.
