The Town of Durham has 2,700 residents in its scenic 50 square miles of rolling foothills, with a small portion of the Town located in the Catskill Park near Mount Pisgah. The countryside and its network of tributary streams flow gently northeast from the ridge line of the northern Catskill Mountains to the Catskill Creek which bisects the Durham Valley as it flows southeast to the Hudson River.
From the village of Catskill, the four hamlets of Durham are accessible via State Highways 23, 145, and 81, the main routes on the way to Cobleskill and Cooperstown. We are 45 minutes from Albany and 2 ½ hours from NYC.
The current major industries are tourism and oral care products, with multinational Glaxo-Smith-Kline having a facility in Durham. Almost 100 businesses are located in Durham. The East Durham Irish Festival on Memorial Day Weekend, Irish Arts Week in Mid-July and the GreyFox Bluegrass Festival in Oak Hill are major musical tourism events, and Zoom Flume Water Park is a major summertime destination. GreyFox and the Irish Festival both draw upwards to 7,000 visitors per night. Durham is also close to skiing at Windham Mountain, and many Town residents are employed there during the winter months.
The main business routes are SR 145 in East Durham and SR 81 in Oak Hill. The State-designated Durham Valley Scenic Byways Corridor is home to a network of 22 miles of Scenic Byways mostly in the hamlets of Cornwallville and Durham, and there are many more miles of scenic roads The Long Path hiking trail between Altamont and New York City goes through Durham.
